Wieliczka Graduation Tower – Salt Inhalation by the Mine

The Wieliczka Graduation Tower is a modern health and leisure facility located right next to the famous Salt Mine. Opened in 2014, it quickly became one of the most popular outdoor attractions in the area. The tower works like a giant natural inhaler: brine flows down bundles of blackthorn twigs, releasing a fine salty mist into the air. Breathing this aerosol is not only refreshing but also beneficial for the respiratory system. Visitors often compare it to a seaside climate, thanks to the high concentration of minerals in the air. It is a peaceful place to relax, restore energy, and enjoy the unique atmosphere created by centuries of salt mining tradition, attracting both tourists and local residents seeking health and recreation in a natural setting. Many guests choose to combine their stay with a visit to the underground mine.

History and Facts

Although the Wieliczka Salt Mine is over 700 years old, the graduation tower is a relatively new addition. It was officially opened in 2014 as part of the surface attractions of the mine. With an impressive 22.5-metre viewing tower and a blackthorn wall surface of over 3,200 square metres, it is the largest brine graduation tower in southern Poland.
The construction is based on traditional spa technology that has been perfected in Central Europe since the Middle Ages. Its wooden walls are densely filled with bundles of blackthorn twigs. Brine is pumped to the top and then trickles down drop by drop, evaporating as it flows. This process enriches the surrounding air with fine mineral particles of iodine, magnesium, and potassium.
The microclimate created here is often compared to sea air and is particularly beneficial for people with asthma, allergies, or other respiratory conditions. Even a short 30-minute visit can support the immune system, relieve stress, and provide a refreshing experience after exploring the underground chambers of the mine.
